WhatsApp Enhances Proxy Feature to Counter Internet Shutdowns, Facilitating Uninterrupted Communicat

Meta's WhatsApp has introduced updates to its proxy feature, expanding the range of content that can be shared within conversations and enabling users to navigate internet shutdowns more effectively.

The recent enhancements allow users to send and receive images, voice notes, files, stickers, and GIFs, as stated by WhatsApp in a communication with The Hacker News. BBC Persian was the first to report on these new features.

Additionally, the updates include simplified setup steps and the introduction of shareable links, enabling users to easily share functioning and valid proxy addresses with their contacts for seamless and automatic installation.

WhatsApp officially launched support for proxy servers earlier this year to help users overcome government-imposed censorship and internet shutdowns, granting them indirect access to the messaging platform.

To further aid users, the company has made available a reference implementation for setting up a proxy server. Users can choose from ports 80, 443, or 5222 and use a domain name that points to the server's IP address.

WhatsApp explained, "A proxy server acts as an intermediary gateway between WhatsApp and external servers." Users are encouraged to search for trusted accounts on social media that regularly provide verified proxy addresses, which can be added to their WhatsApp accounts.

Internet shutdowns have become increasingly prevalent worldwide during times of crises, conflicts, communal violence, and to prevent cheating in examinations. In 2022, authorities in 35 countries imposed internet shutdowns a total of 187 times. In just the first five months of 2023, this number has already reached 80.

India alone implemented 84 shutdowns in 2022, solidifying its position as the leading democratic country to enforce deliberate restrictions for the fifth consecutive year.

The upgrades to WhatsApp's proxy feature aim to empower users in accessing the platform even during internet shutdowns, enabling uninterrupted communication and preserving the free flow of information.
